St. Acathius

Stained glass
Church of St. Pelagius, Weitnau, Germany

This image reflects several aspects of the saint's story. He was a primicerius a leader or chief – in this context, a military commander in the Roman army, thus the armor. He and his men converted to Christianity, thus the cross. For that the Roman authorities subjected them to a number of tortures including crowns of thorns, thus the one on his head. When they would not recant they were crucified on trees, thus the leafless branch.

The leafless branch is the saint's principal attribute.
